Newly named Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), as we've blogged before, is about to decide how he will remake his committee. CQ reports that later this week he may call a meeting about his proposal to eliminate the Communications Subcommittee, which Senator John McCain (R-Arizona), Stevens' predecessor, was planning to chair. Interestingly enough, CQ says Stevens has spoken with every committee member about this change except McCain. Separately, Stevens may create a high-technology subcommitee modeled after the Republican High-Tech Task Force; that group is chaired by Senator John Ensign (R-Nevada), who is on Commerce. Stevens has made it clear, however, he wants telecom policy handled at the full committee level, under his direct authority.
